Generating units at Bay d’Espoir Plant offline for annual maintenance

April 24th, 2017

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (Hydro) is advising that two generating units at the Bay d’Espoir Hydroelectric Generating Facility have been removed from service to complete annual summer maintenance.

Units 5 and 6 will be offline until early May while annual maintenance is completed. There is no anticipated impact to customers as a result of this work.

Hydro’s annual maintenance season generally begins in April when customer electricity demand begins to decline. It extends into November in preparation for the winter months.

During this time, Hydro maintains, replaces and upgrades electricity equipment throughout the province. This includes preventative and corrective maintenance work and inspections, as well as larger capital projects.

Generation units and transmission lines will be removed from service for periods of time in order to complete the work. These yearly planned outages are closely monitored and coordinated to ensure customer supply and system reserve requirements are met.

Hydro’s maintenance program is part of the Company’s mandate to invest in the province’s electricity system to ensure delivery of safe and reliable electricity for customers.
